La Nubia Airport (MZL) in Manizales, Caldas Department, has suspended operations April 1st due to heavy ashfall from the Nevado del Ruiz Volcano, located approximately 140 km (87 miles) northwest of of the captial (Bogota). The volcano churned out an ash plume 6,100 meters after eruptive event in the morning of April 1st. Volcanic material was reported to have been emitted in a northwesterly direction extending 28 km (17 miles) from the summit.
