Travel Alert: Cambodia [April 4, 2022]

Travel Alert

Cambodia will mark the Khmer New Year (Choul Chnam Thmey) April 14-16 nationwide. Celebratory events are likely at public facilities, including places of worship, with protocols like limiting the number of people present at a venue at any one time. Popular event sites include Wat Phnom in Phnom Penh, Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, and Wat Krom in Preah Sihanouk. Smaller programs will occur in other cities nationwide. Thousands of people have participated in events in past years, though upcoming celebrations may involve lower turnout due to COVID-19 concerns.

Local officials in some localities may enforce stricter measures as a precaution against COVID-19 outbreaks. The national government is recommending that all participants in celebrations wear facemasks, practice social distancing, and use hand sanitizers. Authorities are also banning people from throwing water and participating in other activities that would violate distancing rules.

Officials will probably tighten security at places of worship and other celebration venues to enforce security and health protocols. Heightened security may result in periodic road closures, especially around sensitive locations. Localized transport disruptions are likely around major celebration sites. Authorities may also increase health checks at these locations due to COVID-19 concerns. Petty crime, such as theft and pickpocketing, typically heightens during the holiday period.
