Travel Alert: Ottawa [February 7,2022]

Travel Alert

Authorities in Ottawa declared a state of emergency on Feb. 6 due to ongoing protests by truck drivers. The declaration allows officials to deploy additional security personnel to assist with dispersing the protesters and clearing the roads. It is unclear how long the state of emergency will be in effect, though it will likely persist until the demonstrators have been dispersed. The ongoing demonstrations are in opposition to COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

A heightened police presence is likely across the city in the coming days. Business and transport disruptions are also likely as security forces conduct operations. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and the police are possible if protesters engage in acts of violence, are overly disruptive or if they ignore police orders to disperse.
