Jordanian government authorities confirmed that security forces had stopped several narcotic border crossings by drug smugglers to cross into the country from Syria early January 27th. At least 27 drug smugglers were killed during clashes the number could climb above that as more details come out. Security forces did not release information on where the clashes and incursions took place along the border.
Heightened security and further violence remain likely near the shared border. With little advance warning, roadblocks, patrols, and other security-related disruptions are possible, particularly in response to suspected smuggler activity.
