Travel Alert: Romania [January 21, 2022]

travel alert

Unionized employees of the Bucharest Transit Corporation (STB) are striking to demand better pay and working conditions in addition to the resignation of the STB general manager. There is no estimate for how long the strike will last for. Similar demonstrations are possible outside government offices or transport hubs.

The strike has resulted in the cancelation of almost all bus, trolleybus, and tram services in the city. Increased road traffic congestion and crowding on subway services have been reported as commuters seek alternative routes. The strike may also lead to reduced taxi availability. Any demonstrations are likely to pass off peacefully, though isolated clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out.
