Travel Alert: Nigeria [January 5, 2022]

travel alert

Suspected armed bandits attacked the Zungeru Hydroelectric Dam in the Wushishi Local Government Area (LGA), Niger State, January 5th. Initial reports suggest that assailants killed at least two security guards and kidnapped two Chinese workers employed at the dam. Unverified reports indicate that the attackers possibly shot and killed a third Chinese national during the attack, but this cannot be confirmed. The identity of the assailants is unknown and there have been no reported ransom demands as of yet; the incident is likely financially motivated. Security forces are reportedly conducting rescue operations.

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence in the vicinity of the incident in the coming days to apprehend the attackers and rescue the abductees. Localized transport disruptions, such as checkpoints, are likely. Armed clashes involving kidnappers and security forces cannot be ruled.
