Truck drivers affiliated with the National Coordinator of Land Transportation of Containerized Cargo of Panama (Coordinadora Nacional de Transporte Terrestre de Carga Contenerizada de Panama) plan to hold an indefinite nationwide strike starting September 23, 2021. The labor union aims to denounce a perceived negative impact of the shipping industry that could threaten jobs in the sector and demand negotiations with authorities.
The scale of the strike and the extent to which businesses and supply chains will be disrupted remain unclear as of September 17, 2021. It is expected that significant business and supply chain disruptions will happen, especially if the work stoppage becomes protracted or more unions join the action. Demonstrations and strike-related picketing in major cities are also possible, with potential roadblocks along major highways. Clashes with police cannot be ruled out.
