Travel Alert: India

Travel Alert

Fighting has been observed on the Assam-Mizoram border, July 26. Indian officials indicate residents of Assam threw stones at Assam security personnel on the border near Lailapur, Assam. Subsequent fighting was reported in the area, including in Vairengte, Mizoram. Gunfire and an explosion have also been reported; at least 7 Assam security personnel were injured. The clashes occurred amid increasing tensions along the border. Security forces have deployed to border areas.

Authorities from Mizoram and Assam will likely maintain enhanced security along the border in the coming days. Indian officials may erect checkpoints and roadblocks at border crossings, causing transport disruptions. Additional clashes between security forces and civilians cannot be ruled out.

Background on region

Residents of Assam and Mizoram claim that lands along the border belong to their state, respectively. Clashes between residents have occurred on the borders of several districts, including Assam’s Cachar and Mizoram’s Kolasib districts and the border of Assam’s Karimganj and Mizoram’s Mamit districts, in previous months. Unidentified assailants have targeted Assam security personnel with bombs in recent days; the attacks were linked to Assam police operations to remove Mizoram residents who had crossed the border. Despite the Chief Ministers of both states seeking intervention from the Minister of Home Affairs, Amit Shah, additional violence is likely in the short term.
